Firmstrong 3-Speed Cruiser Bike Maintenance and Care Guide

Firmstrong Urban, Bruiser, Chief, Bella, and Siren 3-Speed cruisers use a Shimano Nexus 3-Speed internal gear hub with a rear coaster brake. It’s a simple, reliable setup that doesn’t require a lot of maintenance, but there are a few things worth checking regularly.

Keeping the tires properly inflated, the chain correctly tensioned and lubricated, and the Shimano 3-speed system properly adjusted will take care of most routine maintenance.

Tire Pressure and Condition

We recommend 32–35 PSI for Firmstrong 3-speed cruiser tires.

Low tire pressure is one of the most common reasons a cruiser starts to feel slow or harder to pedal. Check the pressure regularly, especially after the bike has been sitting for a while.

While you’re checking the pressure, take a quick look at both tires for cuts, cracks, worn tread, or anything embedded in the rubber. Also make sure the tire is seated evenly on the rim.

Chain Tension and Lubrication

The chain should have a small amount of up-and-down movement. It should not be pulled extremely tight, but it also shouldn’t hang loosely.

A chain that is too loose can make noise or come off the sprocket. A chain that is too tight can add resistance and put unnecessary wear on the drivetrain.

Keep the chain clean and use bicycle chain lubricant when it starts to look or feel dry. Wipe off excess lubricant after applying it—a heavily oiled chain tends to collect dirt.

If the chain becomes noticeably loose or tight and you’re not comfortable adjusting it yourself, a bike shop can make the adjustment quickly.

Shimano Nexus 3-Speed Adjustment

All Firmstrong 3-speed cruisers covered by this guide use a Shimano Nexus 3-Speed internal gear hub. The gears are enclosed inside the rear hub rather than using an external derailleur, which is one reason these bikes are relatively easy to maintain.

Ride through all three gears occasionally and make sure 1, 2, and 3 engage normally.

If the bike starts skipping between gears, doesn't fully engage a gear, or doesn't shift the way it used to, check the cable adjustment.

For the Shimano Nexus 3-speed system, shift into Gear 2 and check the alignment indicator at the rear hub. The indicator should be properly aligned in second gear. If it isn't, the shift cable needs adjustment.

After making an adjustment, shift through all three gears again to confirm that each one engages correctly.

There is normally no reason to open the Shimano Nexus hub for routine maintenance. Internal hub or coaster brake service is better left to a bicycle mechanic.

Coaster Brake

The rear coaster brake is built into the Shimano Nexus hub and is activated by pedaling backward.

Before riding, make sure the brake engages normally and gives you adequate stopping power.

If braking suddenly feels weaker, inconsistent, unusually rough, or different from what you're used to, have the rear hub and brake checked before continuing to ride.

Wheels and Spokes

Every so often, lift each wheel and give it a spin.

The wheel should turn smoothly without an obvious side-to-side wobble. Look for loose spokes, rim damage, unusual rubbing, or loose axle hardware.

One slightly loose spoke is much easier to correct than a wheel that has been ridden for a long time with several loose spokes. If the wheel is visibly out of true, a bike shop should adjust it.

Pedals, Crank, Handlebar, and Seat

Bolts can settle and loosen slightly as a new bicycle is ridden, so it's especially useful to check the bike during the first few rides.

Check the:

  • Pedals and crank arms
  • Handlebar and stem
  • Seat and seatpost
  • Wheel hardware
  • Fenders, racks, baskets, or other accessories

Pay particular attention to the pedals and crank arms. If you hear clicking or knocking while pedaling, or feel any looseness, stop and check it rather than continuing to ride.

Keep the Bike Clean and Dry

If you ride near the beach, in the rain, or on wet roads, wipe the bike down afterward and let it dry.

Salt and moisture are especially hard on chains, spokes, bolts, and other exposed metal parts. Check the chain after wet rides and lubricate it when needed.

Whenever possible, keep your cruiser indoors or in a dry, covered area rather than leaving it outside for long periods.

Basic Maintenance Schedule

When What to Check
Before riding Tires, wheels, steering, coaster brake
Every few weeks Tire pressure (32–35 PSI), chain tension, shifting, loose hardware
Every few months Chain lubrication, spokes, crank, pedals, handlebar, seat, wheel hardware
After rain or beach riding Dry the bike and check the chain
Every 6–12 months General bike inspection

If you ride frequently or regularly ride near the ocean, check the bike more often.

If Something Doesn't Feel Right

The bike feels harder to pedal.
Check the tire pressure first. Make sure both tires are at 32–35 PSI. Then check the chain tension and spin both wheels to see if either has unusual resistance.

The bike isn't shifting correctly.
Shift into Gear 2 and check the Shimano Nexus alignment indicator. If it isn't properly aligned, the shift cable may need adjustment.

The chain is noisy or keeps coming off.
Check the chain tension and condition. A chain that is too loose, too tight, dry, or dirty can cause problems.

The rear wheel doesn't spin normally.
Make sure nothing is rubbing against the wheel or tire. If the resistance seems to be coming from inside the rear hub, have a bike mechanic inspect it.

You hear clicking or knocking while pedaling.
Check the pedals and crank arms for looseness before riding again.

The coaster brake feels different.
If braking is weak, inconsistent, or unusually noisy, have the rear hub and coaster brake inspected.

When to Take the Bike to a Shop

Basic maintenance such as checking tire pressure, chain tension, chain lubrication, and loose hardware can be done at home.

For internal Shimano Nexus hub work, coaster brake repair, wheel truing, spoke replacement, crank or bottom bracket work, or a problem you can't identify, we recommend taking the bike to a qualified bicycle mechanic.
